Ricci has been engaged in sexual freedom activism for several decades.
In 2003, she helped found the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit human rights organization dedicated to defending the personal autonomy of all individuals.
As the Executive Director, then President and CEO, Ricci has led Woodhull for more than twenty years.
Throughout the country, Ricci has testified and spoken at conferences, often addressing contentious subjects in a way that promotes constructive conversation to build bridges and alliances.
Leading the human rights movement, Ricci raises awareness of topics such as censorship, legalizing sex work, shackling pregnant prisoners, and the right to family and reproductive justice.
Since its establishment, the Foundation has fought to establish sexual freedom as a fundamental human right that should be respected in tandem with other arduously earned liberties, such as the freedom of speech, the right to privacy, and the right to a family.
In addition to her allies who speak for specific issues, identities, and communities, Woodhull also advocates broadly for sexual rights, whether she is convincing Congress to outlaw the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution or addressing students about the validity of all consenting families.
The Woodhull Freedom Foundation works to change laws, policies, and procedures related to a range of issues that undermine or threaten our unalienable right to sexual freedom. Woodhull was instrumental in securing the inclusion of domestic partner benefits as a condition of same-sex marriage, a provision that was in jeopardy in the original law.
They participated in the removal of Washington, DC’s “Prostitution Free Zones,” which violated legally protected rights, and they testified and advocated in support of initiatives to stop the practice of shackling prisoners during pregnancy in Florida prisons.
Furthermore, Woodhull’s attempts to change the law pertaining to sexting by minors were successful.
The Woodhull Freedom Foundation is the leading voice at the nexus of human and sexual rights, pushing the US to uphold rather than restrict human rights, particularly those pertaining to sexual freedom. The foundation also promotes legislative, judicial, and corporate accountability and advancement.
In the only federal challenge to the deadly FOSTA unconstitutional laws, Woodhull was the main plaintiff in Woodhull Freedom Foundation v. United States.
